Westway Biosecurity Actions

·        The objective of biosecurity procedures is to reduce the potential infection load by minimizing contact with animals and animal excretions and by decontamination.

Personal Biosecurity On Site

Be aware of site biosecurity requirements

Visit areas in order of least to most likely contamination

   1. Parking Area

   2. Office /  Milk Room

   3. Feed Storage/Mixing

   4. Milking Areas

   5. Feed Alleyways

   6. Cattle Handling areas

   7. Cattle Pens – Calf Hutches

Minimize movement and contact with site

If driving, use farm vehicle to tour area

Personal Biosecurity On Leaving

Scrub off visible mud, dirt, etc.

Decontaminate footgear or dispose of plastic boots on site

Decontaminate vehicle wheels - also get rid of visible dirt before spraying

Leave by shortest route - preferably the way you arrived

Biosecurity - Other

·        Splits - if possible, deliver mill product before farm product.

·        Disinfect tires and hose if load is to be delivered into cattle confinement area

·        Emphasize bulk tank delivery – arrange for the farmer or rancher to fill lick tanks

·        Locate bulk tanks so delivery causes minimal contact with livestock

·        Keep a record of facilities visited.

·        Be alert to what other facility visitors are doing.  Copy good ideas.

·        Assume you are contaminated after visiting a sale barn, fair, rodeo, or show.

·         Good nutrition = greater resistance to infection
