Liquid
Supplement Spills
Don’t hose
down a liquid spill --- Dam it !!!
If you hose down the spill, it will eventually reach a
waterway or sewer, and someone from the EPA or the city will reach you.
Call Westway for a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). It will show that the liquid is not a
hazardous waste, and that it can be disposed of in a landfill.
Treat a spill as if it was on your kitchen floor. Mop it up – don’t hose it down.
This is intended as general information provided for Westway customers. It is not intended for general distribution, nor does it provide complete instruction for spill response procedures.
Liquid Supplement Spills

Don’t hose down a liquid spill. If possible, confine it with a diversionary
structure to dam it up. Recover as much
of the liquid as possible, and soak up the residue with dirt, sawdust, wood
chips, straw, sand etc. and dispose of it in a landfill.
Molasses and the other liquid ingredients that make up the
majority of liquid feeds and mill blends are rich sources of nutrition.
That’s good, but that is also the reason that a liquid blend
will cause a high BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) if it gets into a stream or
lake. It stimulates growth of aquatic
organisms. It also can put a heavy
demand on municipal water treatment
plants if it gets into the sewage system.
If you hose down the spill, it will eventually reach a
waterway or sewer, and someone from the EPA or the city will reach you.
If you don’t already have one, you can also call Westway for
a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). It
will show local officials that the liquid is not a hazardous waste, and that it
can be disposed of in a landfill. That
will keep the guys in space suits from coming out, and will keep your picture
out of the paper.
So, treat a spill as if it was on your kitchen floor. Mop it up – don’t hose it down.
